From Seed to Sanctuary – September Garden Notes
The shift is here. Over the last few weeks, the desert nights have cooled, the air has softened, and the garden is leaning into its next chapter. This is one of my favorite transitions — a time when the summer’s intensity gives way to the steady, grounding rhythm of autumn.
Yesterday, I gathered the last of this season’s thyme, — fragrant, resinous, and ready to lend its strength to the months ahead. Earlier in the season, I harvested passionflower at her peak, tincturing her fresh to capture that just‑picked vitality. Now, her second act is underway: drying gently to complete the double tincture method, layering fresh and dried plant energy into one potent preparation.
With the summer annual rows now bowing out, I’m giving them a well‑earned rest. They’ll be composted, their nutrients returned to the soil, and left to sleep under the winter sun. In their place, new rows are being prepared for fall herbs — those cool‑season allies that thrive in the low desert’s gentler light. These plantings will carry us through the cooler months, offering fresh leaves, blossoms, and roots for teas, tinctures, and seasonal blends.
This is the quiet magic of the apothecary garden: nothing is ever truly ending, only transforming. The thyme you sip in winter began as a summer sprig. The passionflower that soothes your evening was once a wild tangle in the heat. The compost from this year’s annuals will feed next spring’s blooms.
As I walk the rows in the early morning, I can feel the garden exhale — and I exhale with it. Autumn is here, and with it, a new season of tending, harvesting, and creating.
